Frederick II's Legacy
Frederick the Great left a huge
impact on Prussia. He was one of the country’s most important kings. One way
Frederick left his mark on Prussia is by supporting the arts. Frederick always
loved art, poetry, paintings, French literature, Italian music, and
architecture. Because he was a wealthy king, Frederick was able to be a patron
of the arts. He supplied funding to build many important buildings (that are
still used today?). He hired the best architects he could to design his many
projects. He had them design buildings that housed the arts, such as an Opera
House. This shows how he supported the general happiness of his subjects. He
wanted his country to be fortunate and joyful, as a father would to his
children. Frederick is famous for his belief (, which contrasted with his
father’s views,) that kings should be fatherly to their people. He chose to rule
his country, and be respected out of love rather than fear. The peoples’ love
for him is perhaps why he is remembered and celebrated to this day.
Frederick II also left his mark through a
legacy of great strength within the country. He set a precedent of military
strength: By raising a great army, Frederick was able to keep his country safe
and well protected, as well as being ready to go to war if necessary. Frederick
was able to support his country and army through good diplomacy. He did end the
War of Austrian Succession with the treaty of Aix-la-Chappelle, which granted
him the province of Silesia in exchange for the fighting to end. Frederick also
made allies with Britain during the Seven Year’s War. Frederick did one last
thing for his country, he established them as a major European power. Through
his conquest of the Austrian land of Silesia, and his refusal to give up his
cause, Frederick was able to gain the fearful respect of the other countries in
Europe. It was because of him they took Prussia seriously.
Overall, Frederick William the Great was a
smart, strong, ruler who left a great legacy. He will be remembered fondly
forever
